Hula Hut on Lake Austin

The Hula Hut on Lake Austin is a wonderful place to hang out with family and friends and enjoy their wonderful menu of  mixed drinks and margaritas.

Since June of 1993, Hula Hut has been a little piece of the tropics in Austin, Texas. It about a five minute drive from downtown with makes for a great place to eat your pre-6th Street meal.  Menu highlights include such delicacies as Coconut Fried Shrimp, lavish Pu Pu Platters, our famous South Bay Seasar Salad, and Hawaiian Fajitas.

The restaurant is decked out with tiki torches, bamboo walls, grass-thatched bars and thousands of colored lights. Music from traditional Hawaiian to surf rock floats out over the water. And if there happens to be a wait for dinner just head out to the Palapa bar for a Mango Margarita and watch as the sun sets over the shores of Lake Austin.

Tom Miller Dam

The Tom Miller Dam seperates Lake Austin and Town Lake.

Tom Miller Dam is leased to LCRA (Lower Colorado River Authority) by the City of Austin until December 2020. The dam, built to provide hydroelectricity and store water, creates Lake Austin.

Named for an Austin mayor, the dam was built from 1938 to 1940 atop the remains of two earlier structures, both called Austin Dam. The first was built from 1890 to 1893, and the other from 1909 to 1912. Massive floods destroyed both structures. The lake originally was called Lake McDonald.
