The Austonian - Construction Update
Wednesday, February 13, 2008
When complete, The Austonian will reach 680 feet in height (56 stories), occupy 1/3 of a city block and stand as Austin's tallest building and the tallest residential building in Texas. Construction of a building this tall requires complex structural design and support. On February 3, the first major milestone in the building of The Austonian was completed.
Approximately 198 trucks of concrete arrived at The Austonian site and filled the Mat Slab form, which is reinforced by 480,000 pounds of structural steel and connected to 47 piers reaching down to the bedrock below. The volume of concrete poured in the Mat Slab is substantial enough to cover the football field at UT's Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium with 10 inches of material. This interconnection of concrete and steel is one of the largest and most complex in the history of downtown Austin.
