Barton Springs PoolKnown as the "Crown Jewel of Austin," Barton Springs Pool is located on the south shore of Town Lake off of Barton Springs Road. Barton Springs is a spring-fed pool with a year-round average tempature of 68 degrees. Due to the natural spring located near the diving board , the pool is colder in some places. Barton springs Pool is about 900 feet in length and covers 3 acres. It was formed when Barton Creek was dammed up and the pool has a natural limestone rock and grvel bottom. On any given day you will find sunbathers, lap swimmers, and people just trying to escape the hot Texas sun enjoying a day at Austin's most famous pool. Barton Springs is made up of four natural springs flowing from the Edward's Aquafier, the main source of drinking water in Austin, TX. Barton Spring is, by far, the most popular, yet the least visible due to being completely submerged by Barton Springs Pool. The other three springs that make up Barton Springs are Eliza Springs, Old Mill, and Upper Barton Springs. Eliza Springs is located on the NW side of the pool behind the concession stand (Zilker Cafe).Eliza Springs sits within an amphitheater shaped concrete structure built in 1917 by Andrew Zilker. Old Mill Spring (also known as Sunken Gardens) is located east of the pool, and is currently fenced to protect the Barton Springs salamander. Upper Barton Spring is located in the creek bed of Barton Creek, about a half mile upstream of Barton Springs Pool. Frequently dry, Upper Barton Spring is fully submerged by Barton Creek during floods.
